The minister confirms Spain to apply prolonged smoking prohibition next year

Restaurant terraces and bull rings will escape the harsher measures

The Health Minister has confirmed that Spain is to introduce an extended smoking ban next year, when, from an as yet to be confirmed date, ‘No Smoking’ signs will be seen in all closed public places. The legislation which has been in place since 2006 currently permits the smaller bars and restaurants to choose whether to allow smoking on the premises or not; if they do allow it, they must provide a separate closed-off area for smokers.

That option will no longer exist once the changes are brought in, but Minister Trinidad Jiménez has confirmed however that the stricter measures will not extend to open air premises, such as restaurant terraces and bull rings, where smoking will still be permitted.

Europa Press reports that the Minister said in a radio interview with Rac1 on Monday that the government’s decision is fundamentally based on protecting health, and said she believes that Spain is ‘culturally prepared’ for stricter measures to be adopted. There was no indication from the Minister on exactly when during 2010 the extended ban will be implemented, although she did comment that negotiations are in their final phase, with a large amount of support for the move amongst politicians.

The planned changes have however been criticised by the hostelry sector, where it’s feared that profits will see a sharp drop and many businesses may be forced to close.

Trips on the VSS Enterprise
will cost about £110,000

Virgin announced the first passenger flights into space. Sir Richard Branson's company hopes to offer trips in the Virgin Galactic spacecraft within 18 months.

Each two-hour flight will cost £110,000, take passengers 62 miles above the earth's surface and include up to 10 minutes of weightlessness.

Virgin says it has signed a £14million deal with the makers of American SpaceShipOne, which this year became the first private spacecraft. Virgin Galactic, a company set up to run the space tourism business, will begin building two craft based on the SpaceShipOne design next year.

A spokesman for Virgin claimed the first of these, named VSS Enterprise, could make its first flights within 18 months.

"This technology has been proven already, and we expect to invest around £100million to build the first two spaceships. We will be scaling up the design of SpaceShipOne to allow more passengers to fly than the three in the current design," he said.

"Richard will definitely be on board the first flight - it is something he is very passionate about."

Virgin claimed its pricing for the flights was affordable.

"We believe we will be able to take about 3,000 people into orbit in the first year. Obviously prices will come down over time, but at that price research has shown there is a huge market," said the spokesman.

Sir Richard said: "We've always had a dream of developing space tourism. We hope to create thousands of astronauts over the next few years. It

will also allow every country to have their own astronauts rather than the privileged few."

Passengers on the flights will launch from the Mojave Spaceport in the Californian desert and be carried under a larger plane to 50,000 feet. There the spaceship will be released and rocket motors will power it to about 62 miles above the earth.

Passengers will see the curvature of the earth and, because the craft will have a pressurised cabin, they will not need a spacesuit or their own oxygen supply. To return to earth the rocket fins are rotated, turning them into wings to allow the craft to glide back to the airport.

Virgin said: "Once we have a licence to export these spaceships from the US, we are looking at launches from Britain and Australia."

SpaceShipOne, which was funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, will this week bid to win the $10million Ansari X Prize, offered to the first company to complete two space flights within two weeks. Virgin is sponsoring the attempt.

Branson is also working with Burt Rutan, SpaceShipOne's designer, on a plane to attempt the first nonrefuelled flight around the world.

STICKY VICKY GETS HER NAME BACK

ONE of Benidorm most well-known entertainers, Sticky Vicky, has been supported by Valencia Provincial court in her legal battle to win back her artistic name.

María Victoria Aragües, also known as Vicky Leyton, filed a law suit with the court against fellow erotic artist, Sexy Barbara, who registered the name Sticky Vicky.

Over the years, Vicky Leyton's shows have been very popular among visitors to Benidorm, especially British tourists who were the first to refer to the erotic artist as 'Sticky Vicky' - a name she has since used in her advertising.

However, rival erotic artist María Rosa Pereira (Sexy Barbara) registered the name and launched 'the official Sticky Vicky site' on the internet.

After years of legal wrangling to recover her stage name, a Valencia court has now ruled that Vicky Leyton is the artist who has always been regarded as 'Sticky Vicky' and thus María Rosa Pereira did not have the right to registerthe name.

The ruling says María Rosa Pereira 'took advantage of someone else's reputation'.

Vicky Leyton and her daughter Demaría Leyton, who also performs a sexy magic show, continues to be a very popular act in Benidorm - although their shows are obviously not for all age groups.

Several years ago a false rumour claiming Sticky Vicky had died
